Suggestions for Parents:
Check the website to be aware of what's happening in your child's classes.
Check your child's binder for any unfinished classwork to be completed as homework.
Check the take home folder that will travel to and from school with your child each day. This folder could include papers from the school, PTA or completed work.
Establish a time and place for homework to be completed. Keep a few basic items handy: pencils, notebook paper, etc.
Remember you can access the Science and Social Studies textbooks online.
When supporting your child with homework, don't do it for him/her. Ask guiding questions to prompt the child. Guide the child to look at notes taken in class or use the textbook for support. If your child is struggling, write a note on the homework and sign it.
Establish a neatness standard when checking your child's work.
Tests Students will need to study at home. This may be the first year that factual information will need to be memorized (science and social studies especially) with an understanding of the why or how these events/facts happened. Most often, students will be given a study guide with information on the expectations and learning targets that will be on the test. Parent signatures are requested on each study guide after your child has finished studying.
As a parent, you will need to show your child how to study and guide them. As a teacher, we will suggest ideas to your child. Here are a few...
Create flashcards for vocabulary or basic facts.
Ask the questions on the study guide, allowing the student to answer in his own words. Look for key phrases or vocabulary.
Write out a practice essay or short answer to known learning target questions.
Quiz topics while you are in the car.
Study a bit for a couple of nights before an exam instead of cramming right before.
Do practice problems for areas that are a concern.
